John Day and Bonneville Smolt Monitoring

The airlift sampling system was used from 1985 to 1997 and utilized a pump system which terminated at the top end of a funnel placed in the gatewell slot and deposited the collected fish in a trap basket. This method was abondoned when the new Juvenile Bypass System was completed in 1998, with the expectation that taking a subsample from all of the operational gatewells (max. of 48) would provide a more representative sample of the fish that were passing John Day Dam.
