Counting Metadata

During the fish passage season (April through October) the COE uses visual counting from 0400-2000 PST, during periods with daylight savings time this time is actually 0500 to 2100. The COEs QA/QC program involves a one hour test each month for all fish counters. During this test, both the tested fish counter and the fish count supervisor each count each species passing for one hour. The tested fish counter must score within 95% of the counts recorded by the fish count supervisor for all species other than shad which is within 85%. During visual counting, fish counters typically get a 10 min break every hour; therefore, counts over a 50 minute period are multiplied by a factor of 1.2 to obtain an estimate of a full hours counts. In addition, the identification of spring, summer and fall Chinook is determined by the dates set by the COE in the following table:

Dates used to classify spring, summer and fall chinook

  • Daily adult salmon or shad and lamprey counts for a selected COE Dam, year and month.
  • Daily adult salmon or shad and lamprey counts with running sums for a selected COE Dam, year and month.
  • Monthly totals for salmon or shad and lamprey at a selected COE Dam. The data include monthly totals for last year through the first year of when the dam began collecting adult dam count data.
  • Monthly totals for other fish at a selected COE Dam. The data include monthly totals for last year through the first year when the dam began collecting adult dam count data. The other fish include counts for the following database columns: catfish, cod, shad, lamprey, minnow, perch, sculpin, eulachon, stickleback, sturgeon, sucker, sunfish, troutperch, and bull trout. The minnow column has the following footnote associated with it: The family Cyprinidae minnow the fish counters have been counting in recent years are Grass carp.

3 Year-to-Date and Annual Sums Reports
  • Three possible results
  • Year-to-date salmon counts for the current year at all COE dams.
  • Year-to-date totals for salmon at a selected COE Dam for the current year. The data include yearly totals for last year through the first year of when the dam began collecting adult dam count data.
  • Year-to-date totals for other fish at a selected COE Dam. The data include yearly totals for last year through the first year when the dam began collecting adult dam count data. The minnow column has the following footnote associated with it: The family Cyprinidae minnow the fish counters have been counting in recent years are Grass carp.

4 Ladder Split Report Daily counts for salmon or shad and lamprey for each ladder organized by COE Dam for a selected date range. The data includes a total counts line for each ladder for the date range selected.
5 Daily Report Daily counts for a selected single day for salmon or shad and lamprey at each ladder organized by COE Dame. The data includes a total counts line for each COE Dam.
6 24 Hour Report Twenty-four-hour report includes hourly counts for a selected ladder, species, and date range.

Note: Hourly average counts are valuable in determining diel timing by species at dams to help determine ideal times for maintenance of equipment that could impact ladder operation or operations that impact attraction.
